CO₂ (carbon dioxide) carbonation or fizz is the process of dissolving CO₂ in carbonated soft drinks, sparkling water and beers. It gives them their refreshing taste sensations.

The process usually involves carbonation of CO₂ under pressure. The CO₂ is released as small bubbles, which give carbonated drinks their sparkling or fizzy effect. In addition, CO₂ carbonation impedes fungi and bacteria growth.
